Geff: Land of the free

11/08/09  ||  Smalley

Hey, this one was kind of a nice surprise, considering it’s better than most bands who have to ask GD to get a review for their album. Geff has a bunch of musicians who played with other established Swedish bands in the past, and though that doesn’t keep them from having an awfully mundane name, at least they sound somewhat experienced at pleasing the listener; their sound is something of a power metal/classic rock lite hybrid, and while I can’t say it’s a very original combo in practice, it’s inoffensive at the worst, and somewhat enjoyable at best, so that’s nice.

The vocalist has a slightly high-pitched whine to his voice, similar to Angra’s later singer (if you don’t know what he sounds like, listen to Angra, they kick ass), but he’s tolerable to listen to, with the band’s keyboard work and drumming being good, the riffs, decent, lead guitar work (for the most part) and backup vox, generic. And their songwriting, overall, is pretty decent, I admit, but the lightness and blandness of their sound keep Geff from being better; we need more bite here, more urgency, Geff.

Still, while “Land of the free” didn’t leave much of an impression, I still kind of enjoyed it while it lasted, and thought about giving out a 7(!), so I’m definitely hopeful for any future Geff albums. Just take this review’s advice, guys, and you’ll do fine next time!
